Comic Relief

A fellow MH campaigner and fine artist sent me this pic to place on the blog to illustrate his disgust with the total lack of accountability in the MH charity sector and his view of the relationship between charities, the regulatory Charity Commission and the totally useless Independent Complaints Reviewer(ICR).

I decided to apply a little self censorship as the Charity Commission and ICR have gone to such great lengths to protect themselves from looking at or investigating the ' obscene and distressing ' pornographic content a senior MH charity official and his friends have been deliberately targetting at MH service users.

Well censored I would say !

The Charity Commission appears to be little more than a sandbagging device to allow the new growth of large mental health charities to morph into a service provider sector which has little accountability and maximum linkages to Govt and influence (and even an eye on funding streams)in a kind of insider dealing way ..Some are clearly advising Govt , helping to form policy and are in receipt of funds "for the public benefit" and even sometimes actual public funds ...

Its unchecked and partly out of control and the ICR know it ..

Yes, I notice how the Charity Commission homed in on the Smith Institute ( Registered Charity No. 1062967 ) for being a political rather than charitable organisation but ignored a formal complaint about the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health ( Company limited by guarantee no. 4373019 | Charity no. 1091156 ) bankrooling and owning NIMHE's website and pushing Government policy while half of its staff were employed in NIMHE promoting roles.

NIMHE is a Government quango.

Now compare the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health's aims and objectives and connections with Government with the Smith Institute which also claims to be an independent think tank, which has been set up to undertake research and education in issues that flow from the changing relationship between social values and economic imperatives. In recent years the Institute has centred its work on the policy implications arising from the interactions of equality, enterprise and equity.

The green light is being given for a new sector development with New Labour because of the mounting problems of an economy which has seen huge sections of its productive base disappear and an ageing more knackered out population . The Charity sector heads are rubbing their hands and see some rich pickings with potentially some very high earnings to be had - yet their support of Top Down funding streams and their own networks having control over them is all too apparent. The monitoring of this is very weak by the media too because all too often they are part of the networks...

Yes, the Lord-Levy-fication of Treatment and Care is well underway with arrests like Levy's on the cards further down the line.
